In the pre-dawn hours of July 5, 2023, in Cordele, Georgia, the life of 26-year-old Crisp County Sheriff's Deputy Tyee Michael Browne was tragically cut short. A male, Browne was a dedicated public servant, having served with the sheriff's office for less than a year after graduating from the police academy in September 2022. He was also a veteran of the Army National Guard.
The fatal encounter began around 3:40 a.m. when Deputy Browne responded to a call about a suspicious truck stopped in the middle of Highway 280 West. Upon investigation, he discovered the vehicle had been reported stolen. As he attempted to detain the occupant, identified as 25-year-old Croshawn Cross of Unadilla, a struggle ensued. Cross managed to draw a handgun and fired at Deputy Browne, striking him.
Following the shooting, Cross fled the scene in Deputy Browne's patrol car, initiating a multi-county pursuit. Law enforcement officers from various agencies joined the chase, which reached high speeds as it moved onto Interstate 75. Responding deputies who arrived at the initial scene fired shots at Cross as he fled. Deputy Browne was rushed to a local hospital, but he succumbed to his injuries.
The chase concluded on Interstate 475 in Monroe County, where law enforcement successfully apprehended Croshawn Cross and recovered the stolen patrol vehicle. Cross, a convicted felon, was subsequently charged with a litany of offenses, including malice murder, felony murder, aggravated assault, carjacking, and possession of a firearm by a convicted felon. In August 2023, Croshawn Cross pleaded guilty to the murder of Deputy Tyee Browne and was sentenced to life in prison without the possibility of parole.
