On an August morning in 2023, the life of Gisele Marina Razo Lara, a 21-year-old White/Caucasian senior biology major at Columbus State University, was tragically cut short. She was fatally shot in a campus parking lot in Columbus, Georgia, in what was determined to be a murder-suicide. The man responsible for her death was her 25-year-old classmate, Nathaniel Janik, who took his own life after killing her.
In the days leading up to the fatal encounter, Lara had expressed fears for her
safety due to harassment from Janik. She had reported his alarming behavior to university officials, specifically telling a professor that she felt unsafe around him. The situation escalated on the morning of August 18, 2023, when Lara and Janik had a noticeable altercation before class, leaving Lara visibly distressed. Following the class, Janik followed her to her car. It was there that he confronted her, ultimately shooting her as she sat in her vehicle before turning the gun on himself. An autopsy later confirmed that Lara died from a gunshot wound to the head, and her death was ruled a homicide.
In the aftermath of the tragedy, Gisele's mother, Rebeca Lara, announced her intention to file a $25 million wrongful death lawsuit against Columbus State University, the Georgia Board of Regents, and the State of Georgia. The lawsuit alleges that the university was negligent and failed to protect her daughter despite her pleas for help. It claims that university employees did not follow proper procedures and that their actions, or lack thereof, contributed to Gisele's death. The family's legal team asserts that if the university had been properly trained and had followed the law, Gisele would still be alive today. The university has since stated that it has updated its emergency and incident response procedures.
