In the early morning hours of January 9, 2024, the life of 19-year-old Jahnari “Esco” Smith was cut short in a fatal shooting at The Hills at Greenbriar apartments on Campbellton Road in Atlanta, Georgia. A Black male, Smith was discovered by responding officers in the driver's seat of a black Nissan Altima that had crashed into a building within the complex.
He had sustained a gunshot wound and was pronounced dead at the scene.
Investigations into the shooting revealed that Smith had arranged to meet someone at the apartment complex to sell marijuana. An acquaintance who accompanied him told police that Smith had expressed nervousness about the transaction beforehand. Surveillance footage from the complex captured five individuals waiting in the parking lot prior to Smith's arrival. As Smith drove into the parking area, three of the individuals approached the driver's side of his Nissan and opened fire. The car then accelerated, striking a parked vehicle before crashing into an apartment building. All five suspects were seen fleeing the scene.
The investigation led to the arrest of 19-year-old Michael Stephens, who was charged with murder and aggravated assault in connection with Smith's death. It was revealed that Smith and Stephens had met in the Fulton County Jail in June of the previous year. According to an arrest warrant, Smith had told his acquaintance that he had gotten along with Stephens while they were incarcerated. At the time of their previous incarcerations, Smith had faced charges including participating in a criminal street gang, while Stephens faced charges of aggravated assault and battery. The motive for the shooting is believed to be a botched drug deal.
