In the early hours of a Monday morning in Atlanta's historic Sweet Auburn neighborhood, a night of enjoyment turned into a scene of tragedy. Santos J. Wyatt, a 27-year-old male, was killed in a mass shooting on July 28, 2025. The incident, which also left 10 others wounded, unfolded around 1:27 a.m. near the streetcar stop on Edgewood Avenue, a popular nightlife area. Wyatt, who was with friends and heading home, was an innocent bystander in the eruption of gunfire.
He was pronounced dead at the scene.
The shooting chaos involved at least four suspects who are believed to have opened fire on a crowd. Atlanta police quickly launched an investigation, seeking three male suspects and one female suspect. Investigators recovered multiple firearms and nearly three dozen shell casings from the scene. The victims of the shooting ranged in age from 18 to 29, with one 18-year-old male listed in critical condition.
A significant breakthrough in the case came on August 8, 2025, when 19-year-old Rico T. Arnold was arrested during a traffic stop in Clayton County. Arnold was subsequently charged with one count of murder for the death of Santos J. Wyatt and 10 counts of aggravated assault for the injuries sustained by the other victims. Despite this arrest, the Atlanta Police Department continues to search for the remaining suspects connected to the deadly shooting.
Santos J. Wyatt was remembered by his family as a devoted father to his 8-year-old son, Santos Jr. His mother, Colandra Atkinson, described him as the family comedian who had a deep passion for cars and dreamed of opening his own body shop. Funeral services for Wyatt were held the following month, with a public viewing at M.D. Walker Funeral Home and a funeral service at Liberty Baptist Church.
