On the evening of Sunday, March 31, 2024, 33-year-old Jamal Phillips was fatally shot in what his family believes was a senseless act of violence in northwest Atlanta, Georgia. The shooting, which also left a teenage girl wounded, occurred at approximately 9:00 p.m. in the parking lot of the Buy Low Super Market on James Jackson Parkway.
According to reports, Atlanta police were called to the scene and discovered Phillips with a gunshot wound. He was rushed to a nearby hospital, where he ultimately succumbed to his injuries. The Fulton County Medical Examiner's Office later confirmed his identity. While investigating at the convenience store, officers were notified of a second victim, a 16-year-old girl, who had made her way to a fire station on Hollywood Road with multiple gunshot wounds. She was reported to be alert and was transported to a hospital for treatment.
In the wake of the shooting, family and friends of Jamal Phillips described him as an innocent bystander who was simply in the wrong place at the wrong time. His brother-in-law, Owen Thomas, expressed his grief and pleaded for an end to the violence, stating, 'He was not the target... he was an innocent bystander, just like the young 16-year-old.' A friend mentioned that just half an hour before the tragic incident, Phillips had been at a peaceful gathering with friends that felt like a 'big family reunion.'
Atlanta police have stated they are searching for a suspect who was in a dark-colored car at the time of the incident. As of early April 2024, no arrests have been made, and no suspects have been publicly identified in connection with the shooting. The investigation remains ongoing as authorities continue to seek information from the public.
