In the early morning hours of Thursday, April 11, 2024, the community of McRae-Helena, Georgia, was disturbed by the sound of gunfire. At approximately 1:20 a.m., the McRae-Helena Police Department received a call reporting shots fired near East Magnolia Street and Daughtry Avenue. When officers arrived to investigate, they discovered a tragic scene at the nearby Oak Grove Cemetery.
Inside the cemetery, they found a sport utility vehicle that had crashed through a fence before coming to
a stop. The driver, 33-year-old Montez Edronz McMillian, a male resident of McRae-Helena, was found deceased inside the vehicle. It was determined that McMillian had been shot near the intersection before his vehicle entered the cemetery grounds.
The McRae-Helena Police Department requested the assistance of the Georgia Bureau of Investigation to lead the homicide investigation. As of the initial reports, no arrests had been made in connection with the shooting. The GBI has described the investigation as active and ongoing and has appealed to the public for any information that may be relevant to the case. Once the investigation is complete, the findings will be turned over to the Oconee Judicial Circuit District Attorney's Office for review.
