In a tragic turn of events on a Tuesday afternoon in Atlanta, Georgia, a dispute on a public bus escalated into a violent hijacking that claimed the life of 58-year-old Earnest Byrd Jr. A Black male, Byrd was a father and grandfather remembered by his family as a protector and a consistent, kind presence in their lives. He had moved to the Atlanta area about eight years prior from New York City.
The incident unfolded on June 11, 2024, when Byrd was a passenger on a Gwinnett County
transit bus. Authorities report that another passenger, Joseph Grier, 39, engaged in a conflict with Byrd. During the altercation, Byrd reportedly drew a gun, which Grier then allegedly took from him. Grier is accused of using Byrd's own weapon to shoot him in the leg and then hijacking the bus, taking the 17 passengers and the driver hostage.
What followed was a harrowing police chase that spanned multiple counties as the hijacked bus sped through traffic. The pursuit finally ended when law enforcement was able to stop the vehicle. Inside, they found Earnest Byrd Jr. suffering from a gunshot wound. He was transported to a local hospital, where he succumbed to his injury. The Fulton County Medical Examiner later confirmed the cause of death as a gunshot wound to the left leg and ruled the manner of death a homicide.
Joseph Grier was arrested at the scene and subsequently faced a number of serious charges, including murder, aggravated assault, kidnapping, and hijacking a motor vehicle. Byrd's family was left to mourn the sudden and violent loss of a man they described as a dedicated family man and a peaceful individual who would always try to resolve conflict.
