A promising young life was cut short on the evening of March 4, 2018, when 15-year-old Carlos Davis II was fatally shot in what has been described as a tragic accident. The male teenager was at a friend's house in a northwest Atlanta neighborhood when the incident occurred. Just before 7 p.m., while visiting with friends in a bedroom at the Mercury Drive residence, another teen began playing with a pistol. The firearm discharged, striking Davis.
He was privately transported to Grady Memorial Hospital, where he ultimately succumbed to his injuries.
In the hours that followed, the story began to piece itself together. The morning after the shooting, 17-year-old Jefferey Reeves, accompanied by his mother, surrendered to the Atlanta Police. Reeves admitted to the authorities that the shooting was an accident that happened while he was handling the firearm in a room with several other people present. Along with his surrender, Reeves also turned over the weapon involved to the investigators.
Following his confession, Jefferey Reeves was taken into custody and charged with involuntary manslaughter for his role in the death of Carlos Davis II. He was subsequently booked into the Fulton County Jail. The untimely death of Carlos, a Mays High School football player, sent ripples of grief through his family, friends, and the wider community, who remembered him as a leader and an encourager. His mother recalled a final FaceTime call with her son just moments before the fatal shooting, a conversation in which he promised he was on his way home.
