On a Sunday evening in Atlanta, the life of 45-year-old Demarco Mathis was cut short in a sudden act of violence. The male victim was at the Arts Center MARTA station on August 11, 2024, when the tranquil atmosphere of the bus loop was shattered by the sound of gunshots around 9 p.m. A security officer on patrol rushed to the scene to find Mathis with multiple gunshot wounds.
Emergency services were called, and he was transported to Grady Memorial Hospital, but his injuries proved to be fatal.
The investigation into the shooting began immediately. Surveillance footage from the station became a critical piece of evidence, showing Mathis sitting and talking with another man on a bench for about half an hour. In a shocking turn of events, the man he was with, later identified as his coworker Xavier Mosley, 38, suddenly stood up, drew a firearm, and shot Mathis multiple times. The shooter then fled the scene, sparking a manhunt by MARTA and Atlanta police.
Thanks to the clear surveillance footage and the use of facial recognition software, authorities were able to identify Mosley as the suspect. Three days after the shooting, on August 14, 2024, a team of officers from the MARTA Police, the Atlanta Police Department Fugitive Task Force, and the APD SWAT Team executed a search warrant at Mosley's Atlanta residence. They found him hiding in the attic and took him into custody. A handgun found at the scene was later ballistically matched to the crime.
Xavier Mosley was charged with a litany of offenses, including murder, aggravated assault with a deadly weapon, and possession of a firearm by a convicted felon. During the investigation, a possible motive for the senseless killing emerged. Prosecutors suggested that Mosley harbored a false belief that Mathis was involved with his girlfriend. On June 27, 2025, a jury found Xavier Mosley guilty on all counts. He was subsequently sentenced to life in prison for the murder of his coworker. As a result of his actions, Mosley has also been permanently banned from all MARTA properties.
