In the small town of Lumpkin, Georgia, a discovery on September 11, 2024, shattered the community's sense of peace. On that day, 31-year-old Tevin James Wright, a Black male, was found deceased in the driver's seat of his car on Cotton Street. Initially, the scene was reported to the Lumpkin Police Department as a car accident. However, upon their arrival, officers uncovered a more grim reality; Wright had sustained fatal gunshot wounds. The nature of his death immediately turned the investigation from a simple accident to a homicide.
Given the serious nature of the crime, the Lumpkin Police Department requested the assistance of the Georgia Bureau of Investigation to take the lead on the case. As investigators began to piece together the events that led to Wright's death, they appealed to the public for any information that could shed light on the tragic incident. The community's cooperation proved to be a critical element in the progression of the investigation.
Weeks after the discovery of Wright's body, the GBI announced significant breakthroughs in the case. On Thursday, September 19, 2024, a 16-year-old from Lumpkin was arrested and charged with Aggravated Assault and Felony Murder. The following day, a second suspect, 17-year-old Quantavius Cooper of Richland, was also taken into custody and faced the same charges. The final arrest came on Thursday, October 10, 2024, when 19-year-old Zanquez Davis of Lumpkin was apprehended by the Stewart County Sheriff's Office and similarly charged with Aggravated Assault and Felony Murder. Cooper and Davis were subsequently booked into the Stewart County Jail, while the juvenile was held at the Columbus Regional Youth Detention Center. The investigation remains ongoing, and the case is expected to be handed over to the Southwestern District Attorney's Office for prosecution.
