In the quiet, early morning hours of Sunday, December 22, 2024, a residence on Matilda Street in Lumpkin, Georgia, became the scene of a fatal shooting. Delquan Harris, a 23-year-old male from the nearby town of Cuthbert, was discovered with multiple gunshot wounds. The Lumpkin Police Department responded to the call around 3:20 a.m. and, upon assessing the gravity of the situation, requested the assistance of the Georgia Bureau of Investigation to lead the death investigation. Emergency services transported Harris to a hospital in Columbus, Georgia, but his injuries proved to be too severe, and he was pronounced dead.
Present at the scene was 26-year-old Tyrone Smith Jr., also a resident of Cuthbert. Based on statements from witnesses who were there at the time of the incident, law enforcement officers identified Smith as the individual who had shot Harris. Smith was found to be in possession of a handgun and was subsequently arrested at the scene by the responding officers.
Following his arrest, Tyrone Smith Jr. was charged with Aggravated Assault and Felony Murder in connection with the death of Delquan Harris. He was then booked into the Sumter County Jail. The investigation into the shooting remains active and ongoing as authorities continue to gather information. Once the Georgia Bureau of Investigation concludes its inquiry, the case file will be turned over to the Southwestern Judicial Circuit District Attorney's Office for prosecution.
