In the small town of Lumpkin, Georgia, a dispute on a quiet Friday afternoon tragically cut short the life of 34-year-old Jason Alexander Jones. On April 26, 2024, the Lumpkin Police Department responded to reports of gunfire in the 300 block of Main Street around 12:15 p.m. Upon their arrival, they discovered Jason Jones, a Black male, deceased in the front yard of a residence.
Investigations by the Georgia Bureau of Investigation, the Lumpkin Police Department, and the Stewart County Sheriff's Office revealed that Jones had been involved in a physical altercation on the front porch of the home with its owner, 37-year-old Jerrell Staples. The confrontation escalated, leading to Staples allegedly shooting and killing Jones. Known affectionately as 'JJ' to his friends and family, Jones's death left a profound void in the lives of those who knew him.
Following the initial investigation, Jerrell Staples was arrested and faced multiple charges, including felony murder, aggravated assault, and possession of a firearm during the commission of a felony. He was subsequently taken to the Randolph County Jail. The case proceeded to trial, where a Stewart County jury found Jerrell Staples guilty of the murder of Jason Jones. As a result of the conviction, Staples was sentenced to life in prison. The case will be officially prosecuted by the Southwestern Judicial Circuit.
