On May 31, 2015, 14-year-old African American male Edward James Harris IV, known to his family and friends as “EJ,” was fatally shot in a drive-by shooting in Tampa, Florida. The incident occurred around 4:20 p.m. outside Woodland Terrace Park, near the intersection of North 32nd and East Diana Streets, just a block from his home. EJ was walking home after playing basketball when he was struck by gunfire.
He was transported to Tampa General Hospital, where he was pronounced dead shortly after arrival.
EJ's life had been marked by a series of violent encounters prior to his death. In October 2014, he witnessed a stabbing and cooperated with law enforcement, leading to an arrest. Subsequently, in January 2015, he was robbed at gunpoint while playing basketball at a local community center, and an arrest was made in that case as well. In April 2015, EJ survived an attempt on his life when he was shot at five times but was not injured; an arrest was also made in that incident.
The Tampa Police Department released surveillance footage showing a silver or grey four-door vehicle believed to be involved in the shooting. An orange or red car was also seen in the footage, and authorities sought to identify its driver. While both vehicles were eventually located, no arrests have been made in connection with EJ's murder. Police believe that several individuals were present during the shooting, but potential witnesses have been reluctant to come forward, possibly due to fear of retaliation or adherence to a 'no-snitch' culture.
EJ's father, Edward Harris III, has been vocal in his pursuit of justice for his son. He believes that EJ was targeted for cooperating with police in previous incidents. The emotional toll of his son's death has been profound, contributing to a decline in his health, including a stroke that impaired part of his memory. Despite these challenges, he remains committed to seeking justice for EJ.
