In the early morning hours of Friday, July 12, 2024, tragedy struck in the Northeast quadrant of Washington, D.C. It was there, in the 1500 block of Benning Road, that 26-year-old Danzell Hall, a male resident of the area, was found unconscious and unresponsive on the sidewalk just before 3 a.m. He had sustained apparent gunshot wounds, and despite the quick response of D.C. Fire and Emergency Medical Services personnel, no signs of life were found.
Hall was pronounced dead at the scene.
The Metropolitan Police Department's Homicide Division launched an investigation into the killing. A subsequent autopsy revealed that Danzell Hall had died from a gunshot wound to the back, and his death was officially ruled a homicide. As detectives pieced together the events of that fatal morning, they turned to CCTV video from the surrounding area. The surveillance footage proved crucial, ultimately leading investigators to identify a suspect in the unprovoked killing.
On August 20, 2024, just over a month after the shooting, members of the Capital Area Regional Fugitive Task Force located and arrested 41-year-old Michael Grayton, also a resident of Northeast, D.C. He was transported to the Homicide Branch and charged under a D.C. Superior Court arrest warrant with First Degree Murder while Armed. Grayton has remained in custody since his arrest.
The case progressed through the justice system, and on November 1, 2024, Michael Grayton pleaded guilty to a lesser charge of second-degree murder while armed. The plea agreement came despite the expressed wishes of Danzell Hall's eight-year-old son, who, in a letter read to the court, stated that the person responsible should face life in prison. Following the guilty plea, a sentencing date was scheduled for April 25, 2025. Under the terms of the agreement, Grayton faces a sentencing range of 14 to 26 years in prison.
