In the early morning hours of September 15, 2024, a sense of unease settled over a residence in the 2300 block of Marion Barry Avenue in Southeast Washington, D.C. At approximately 2:43 a.m., the sound of gunfire shattered the quiet of the neighborhood. When officers from the Metropolitan Police Department arrived at the scene, they discovered a man inside the home, unconscious and suffering from a gunshot wound. Despite the immediate response from D.C.
Fire and Emergency Medical Services, 36-year-old David Hillard Washington was pronounced dead at the scene.
The investigation into Washington's death was quickly classified as a homicide, prompting an active search for those responsible. Detectives began canvassing the area, and their efforts soon yielded a critical lead. Surveillance cameras near the residence had captured images of the individuals believed to be connected to the fatal shooting. In the days following the incident, the Metropolitan Police Department publicly released these images and a video, urging anyone with information to come forward. A reward of up to $25,000 was offered for any information that would lead to the arrest and conviction of the person or persons responsible for Washington's murder.
For months, the case remained a focal point for investigators. Then, on March 26, 2025, a significant breakthrough occurred. Acting on a D.C. Superior Court arrest warrant, police took 18-year-old Elijah Washington of Southeast, D.C., into custody. He was charged as an adult with First Degree Murder while Armed–Felony Murder, though he had been a juvenile when the crime was committed. The investigation continued, and on September 23, 2025, members of the Capitol Area Regional Fugitive Task Force arrested a second suspect. A 16-year-old male, also from Southeast, D.C., was apprehended under a D.C. Superior Court custody order and faced the same charge of First Degree Murder while Armed–Felony Murder, bringing a new chapter to the ongoing quest for justice for David Hillard Washington.
