On January 21, 2023, Jerry Gilland, a 77-year-old terminally ill patient, was fatally shot by his wife, Ellen Gilland, 76, in his hospital room at AdventHealth Daytona Beach in Florida. The incident occurred as part of a planned suicide pact, according to Ellen Gilland, who claimed they had been discussing the plan for weeks. However, after shooting her husband, Ellen Gilland was unable to carry out her part of the pact and take her own life.
