On February 22, 2023, T’Yonna Judy Marie Major, a 9-year-old African American girl from Orlando, Florida, tragically lost her life in a series of shootings that shocked the community. T’Yonna was a bright and active student at Pine Hills Elementary School, known for her academic excellence and passion for gymnastics. Her dedication to the sport earned her several medals, and she was often referred to as "the next Gabby Douglas" by her coaches.
The day began with the fatal shooting of 38-year-old Nathacha Augustin, who was killed after offering a ride to 19-year-old Keith Melvin Moses. Later that afternoon, Moses returned to the scene and targeted a Spectrum News 13 crew reporting on the earlier incident, fatally shooting reporter Dylan Lyons and critically injuring photographer Jesse Walden. Subsequently, Moses entered the home of T’Yonna Major and her mother, Brandi Major, where he shot both. T’Yonna succumbed to her injuries, while her mother survived.
Authorities arrested Keith Melvin Moses shortly after the shootings. He was found in possession of a Glock. 40-caliber handgun, which was still warm from recent use. Moses has been charged with three counts of first-degree murder and is currently being held without bond. His criminal history includes prior arrests for gun-related offenses, aggravated assault, burglary, and grand theft.
The loss of T’Yonna Major has deeply affected the Orlando community. Her family and friends remember her as a joyful and ambitious child who brought light to everyone around her. In her memory, efforts have been made to honor her legacy and support her family during this difficult time.
