On June 5, 2023, a drive-by shooting occurred in Opa-locka, Florida, resulting in the death of Jose Luis Lucho and leaving a woman in critical condition. The incident took place around 1 a.m. at the intersection of Northwest 22nd Avenue and Lincoln Avenue.
Lucho and the woman, who was identified as his niece, were shot as they were walking out of a Lyft vehicle. The family had just returned from watching a movie at a local theater.
According to the Lyft driver, the shooters drove alongside the ride-share vehicle and opened fire. The driver described hearing multiple shots hitting the car, with the man, Lucho, dying instantly. The woman and a child who was also present were screaming, but the child and the Lyft driver were not injured.
When Miami-Dade Fire Rescue responded to the scene, they declared Lucho dead and transported the woman to Jackson Memorial Hospital Ryder Trauma Center, where she was set to undergo surgery. Her condition remained unknown as of the following morning.
The crime scene showed significant evidence of the shooting, with at least 12 evidence markers on the ground and a car displaying bullet holes on its front windshield. A nearby neighbor reported hearing many bullets go off overnight, which made them very nervous.
As of the report, police had not confirmed any arrests or identified the vehicle involved in the drive-by shooting. The investigation was ongoing, and authorities were seeking any information from the public, offering a reward of up to $5,000 for tips leading to the identification and apprehension of the perpetrators.
