On July 4, 2023, a fatal shooting occurred at the VYPZ lounge, a nightclub located near the 4200 block of North State Road 7 in Lauderdale Lakes, Florida. The victim, identified as 29-year-old Travis Turner, was found suffering from gunshot wounds when deputies from the Broward Sheriff's Office responded to the scene around 2:15 a.m. Despite lifesaving efforts, Turner was pronounced dead at the scene.
The incident happened during an altercation that broke out at the nightclub, leading to the shots being fired. Turner, who had just turned 29 a month prior, was celebrating with friends at the time of the shooting. A woman who was also at the club was injured and later hospitalized with non-life-threatening injuries.
Turner's family described him as a hardworking individual who ran his own mobile mechanic business. His mother characterized him as "a good guy with a good heart, who loved his family." The family is deeply affected by his death, with his mother expressing that it is "so hard" and feeling like "every bone in my body is broken." Turner's sister, Teffanie, mentioned that he had planned to attend her graduation in Jamaica and had even bought her a dress for the occasion, which she instead wore to his funeral.
The Broward Sheriff's Office is currently investigating the murder, and as of the latest reports, there have been no arrests. Homicide detectives are searching for a suspect or suspects and are urging anyone with information to come forward. A reward of up to $5,000 is being offered for information leading to an arrest. The family has also hired an attorney who is advocating for better safety measures at the nightclub to prevent such incidents in the future.
The investigation includes examining the scene where liquor bottles and other debris were scattered, and a dark-colored BMW was towed away, though its connection to the shooting is still unclear. The family and authorities are appealing to the public for any information that could help bring those responsible for Turner's death to justice.
