On October 29, 2023, a fatal shooting occurred in Ybor City, Tampa, Florida, resulting in the deaths of two individuals, including 20-year-old Harrison Boonstoppel. Boonstoppel, described by his parents as friendly and humorous, was an innocent bystander at the time of the shooting. He and his friends had stopped by Ybor City after leaving a nearby Halloween party, intending to check out the scene for only about 20 minutes before the incident occurred.
The shooting took place in the early hours of the morning, around 3 a.m., as bars along Seventh Avenue were closing. A fight between two groups broke out, leading to the exchange of gunfire. More than 20 shots were fired, and in addition to Boonstoppel, 14-year-old Elijah Wilson was also killed. Fifteen others were injured by the gunfire, and one person was injured but not shot.
Harrison Boonstoppel was shot multiple times, specifically in the spleen, liver, and heart, according to the medical examiner’s office. He was transported to Tampa General Hospital, where he succumbed to his injuries.
The investigation led to the arrest of several individuals. Tyrell Phillips, a 22-year-old, was taken into custody shortly after the shooting and charged with second-degree murder in connection with the death of Elijah Wilson. Later, a 14-year-old, identified as Kayden Abney, was arrested on November 16 and subsequently charged with second-degree murder, attempted aggravated battery, and attempted murder for his role in Boonstoppel’s death. Abney was found to have fired the bullet that directly led to Boonstoppel’s death.
The community and law enforcement have been working to address the incident and prevent future violence. A vigil was held to honor the victims, and there have been calls for increased gun regulations and community action to prevent such tragedies. The city has also implemented additional security measures, including more cameras and uniformed officers in parking garages, which have contributed to a decrease in crime statistics in the area.
Boonstoppel’s family has been vocal about their grief and the need for community change. His mother, Brucie Boonstoppel, has advocated for stronger gun laws and expressed her determination to work towards preventing similar incidents in the future. The family and community continue to grapple with the aftermath of the shooting, emphasizing the need for unity, strength, and resilience.
