On Saturday, November 18, 2023, a double shooting occurred in Northwest Miami-Dade, resulting in the death of 33-year-old Michael Jack Bernard and leaving another man in critical condition. The incident took place at the intersection of NW 143rd Street and 16th Court. When police arrived, they found one man dead at the scene, identified as Michael Jack Bernard, and the other victim was transported to Jackson Memorial Hospital in critical condition.
The police investigation led to the arrest of 32-year-old Lekambrick Aljenard Hanna, who was charged with one count of second-degree murder and another for attempted murder. This was not Hanna's first encounter with the law; he had previously been accused of stealing a Miami-Dade fire truck and leading police on a tri-county chase in May.
The shooting is believed to have involved individuals who may have known each other, although the exact nature of their relationship is still under investigation. Witnesses reported hearing gunshots and seeing the SUV, which had several bullet holes, slowly roll into a front yard before someone was seen running away. Neighbors who attempted to help the victims described the scene as chaotic and frightening.
The SUV came to a stop just feet away from the front door of a nearby home, where family members were inside at the time of the incident. They heard the gunshots, came outside, and saw the SUV roll into their yard. One of the residents tried to assist the passenger, who was bleeding from the head but still conscious.
Police have stated that they are not currently searching for any other suspects and have encouraged anyone with information to contact Crime Stoppers. The community has expressed concern and fear following the incident, with some residents considering moving due to the increasing violence in the area.
