On April 18, 2024, a drive-by shooting in a southwest Miami-Dade neighborhood resulted in the death of 48-year-old Antwan Lavon Ingraham. The incident occurred around 2 p.m. in the 11300 block of Southwest 216th Street. Miami-Dade Police responded to the area after receiving a ShotSpotter gunshot detection alert and found Ingraham with gunshot wounds. He was pronounced dead at the scene by Miami-Dade Fire Rescue.
Ingraham was described by neighbors and friends as a hard-working individual who washed cars every day to support his family. He was also known locally as a DJ and worked at a nearby car wash. Neighbors expressed their grief and frustration over the violence, with one neighbor stating, "They took a good man, just know that. That man was a hard-working man, washed cars every day for his family. They gotta stop. The violence gotta stop."
The scene of the crime saw a significant police presence, including officers with rifles and tactical gear who were observed entering an apartment complex nearby. Although one person was taken into custody, it was unclear if this individual was connected to the shooting. Police confirmed that Ingraham was a victim of a drive-by shooting but did not have any information on the vehicle or suspects involved.
Romania Dukes, a member of "Mothers Fighting for Justice," a group advocating against gun violence, knew the victim well and highlighted the tragic nature of the event. She noted that the shooting occurred in the same neighborhood where her 18-year-old son, De'Michael Dukes, was shot and killed in 2014. Dukes emphasized the need for community action to stop the violence, saying, "He didn't deserve to die. The only way we can receive justice and stop all this shooting is if we come together and say enough is enough."
As of the current date, the shooting remains under investigation by the Miami-Dade Police. The community continues to mourn the loss of Antwan Lavon Ingraham, a family-oriented person who was well-respected in his neighborhood.
