On November 22, 2023, a fatal shooting occurred in Tamarac, Florida, resulting in the death of 21-year-old Mateo Delgado. The incident took place around 7:30 p.m. near the 7000 block of Northwest 79th Avenue. Delgado was shot while inside his vehicle and, despite attempting to drive away, he crashed into a nearby pole in the Bonaire at Woodmont neighborhood off Northwest 78th Street.
When deputies from the Broward Sheriff's Office arrived at the scene, they found Delgado suffering from a gunshot wound. He was pronounced dead at the scene. The neighborhood, typically quiet, was left in shock by the sudden and violent incident. Residents expressed their surprise and fear, noting that such events were rare in the area.
The investigation into Delgado's death led to the arrest of four teenagers. Initially, a 17-year-old suspect was arrested in January 2024 and charged with felony murder in connection with the shooting. The identity of this initial suspect was not immediately released to the public.
Later, it was revealed that three additional teenagers were also involved. The four suspects have been identified as Oren Jackson, Irvine Hicks, Jaheam Brooks, and Nathan Dormeus. All four have been indicted for first-degree murder and shooting into an occupied vehicle. It is noteworthy that Oren Jackson is currently being charged as a juvenile, although the state is seeking to change this status.
