On December 13, 2023, a double homicide occurred in the Flagami neighborhood of Miami, Florida. The victims were identified as Irisbel Cartalla, 50, and her daughter, Isbelsy Olivera, 22. The incident took place at the Yolanda Villas condominiums, located at 801 NW 47th Ave., approximately a mile south of the Miami International Airport.
The shooting happened around 9:30 a.m.
when a man, later identified as Carlos Alexander Travieso, 48, followed another person into the apartment and ambushed the women. Cartalla and Olivera were found unresponsive in front of the apartment door.
Irisbel Cartalla worked as a custodian at the condominium building and was described by the property manager as "full of life, very happy, outgoing." Neighbors remembered her fondly, with one neighbor, Jackie Granda, describing her as a "very wonderful lady" who was always happy and nice.
The investigation led police to initially suspect Cartalla’s estranged husband, but it was later confirmed that the shooter was actually Olivera’s ex-boyfriend, Carlos Alexander Travieso. Travieso drove to a nearby police station and confessed to the crime.
The community was deeply affected by the tragedy, especially given the timing during the holiday season. The Miami Police Department continued to gather information and conduct an ongoing investigation into the incident.
Irisbel Cartalla would have celebrated her 51st birthday on the Saturday following her death, and her daughter, Isbelsy Olivera, would have turned 23 on December 21. The incident left the community in shock and mourning for the loss of two lives described as "beautiful people" who did not deserve such a tragic end.
