On January 25, 2024, deputies from the Leon County Sheriff's Office responded to a welfare check at a residence on Gateshead Circle in Tallahassee, Florida. Upon entry, they discovered the bodies of 51-year-old African American female Penny Lucas and her husband, 62-year-old John Lucas Jr. Penny Lucas had died from a gunshot wound, while John Lucas Jr. was found with an apparent self-inflicted gunshot wound.
