On February 7, 2024, a double shooting occurred in the parking lot of a Lauderhill strip mall, resulting in the death of Christopher Matthew Fletcher, a 34-year-old man. The incident took place in the 4500 block of N University Drive, near The Spot Lounge Bar & Grill.
Lauderhill police received a call about the shooting around 3:30 a.m. Upon arrival, officers found a man who had been shot multiple times and was lying on the ground.
Christopher Matthew Fletcher was rushed to Broward Health Medical Center, where he succumbed to his injuries.
In addition to Fletcher's death, a second unidentified man was also injured in the shooting. He walked into Florida Medical Center for treatment of a non-life-threatening gunshot wound and was later transferred to Broward Health Medical Center.
The shooting is believed to have stemmed from an altercation amongst individuals in the parking lot. Investigators have determined that this was an isolated incident, but as of the report, they had not identified any suspects or made any arrests.
This incident marked the fourth deadly shooting reported in Lauderhill since January 1, 2024, highlighting ongoing concerns about violence in the area. Local authorities, including Lauderhill City Commissioner Melissa Dunn, are implementing programs such as Peace 365 to address the root causes of violence and improve conflict resolution skills within the community. The city is also working to enhance technology to help police respond more quickly to gunfire and to combat domestic violence.
