Travon Kamel Warren, a 20-year-old resident of Pompano Beach, Florida, was fatally shot outside an Airbnb in Fort Lauderdale on March 9, 2024. The incident occurred in the afternoon, after a rowdy party had taken place at the short-term rental property the night before. Witnesses, including Jason Fogelman, a neighborhood watch leader, and his 9-year-old son, reported hearing five shots fired and seeing Warren drop to the ground as his friends attempted to save him.
Surveillance videos captured the events surrounding the shooting. A Ring camera video from across the street showed a two-door sports car, believed to be a Mustang, passing by the scene, followed by the sound of gunshots and a witness screaming in terror. The video also depicted a group carrying Warren to a sports utility vehicle, with yelling and crying heard in the background. The SUV and a BMW were seen leaving the area as police sirens approached.
The shooting did not occur at the nearby Casa Del Sol apartment building, as initially reported, but at the neighboring home where the party had been held. Neighbors had long complained about the short-term rental, fearing trouble due to previous incidents, including a wine bottle being thrown at Fogelman's mother the night before the shooting.
Warren was taken to Broward Health Imperial Point, a hospital located north of the crime scene, where he was pronounced dead. The Fort Lauderdale Police Department (FLPD) detained three individuals at the scene and were investigating to determine if any additional suspects were involved. However, detectives later stated that they did not believe any further suspects were outstanding.
The incident has left the community rattled, with residents expressing concerns about the impact of short-term rentals in their neighborhood. A meeting was planned with local leaders to discuss options for addressing these issues. The FLPD urged anyone with information about the case to contact them or Broward County Crime Stoppers.
