On June 2, 2024, a tragic incident occurred at a residence in the Kendall Lakes area of Southwest Miami-Dade, resulting in the deaths of four individuals, including 84-year-old Mercedes Morato.
Mercedes Morato, along with her husband Jesus Regueira, Sr., 83, their son Jesus Regueira, Jr., 62, and Jesus Regueira, Jr.'s partner, Kyrsten Marie Stahre, 61, were found dead inside their home at 4510 SW 137th Court.
The bodies were discovered by a family friend, Johanna Cruz, and her mother, who had been bringing food to Morato as she was under hospice care due to a severe stroke.
According to the Miami-Dade Police Department, the incident was determined to be a murder-suicide. Jesus Regueira, Jr. is identified as the perpetrator who shot and killed his parents, his partner, and then himself. A firearm was found next to Regueira, Jr.'s body. Neighbors and family members described the scene as gruesome, with Cruz detailing the positions of the bodies and the visible signs of violence.
Mercedes Morato had been in good spirits despite her health issues, with frequent visits from nurses. However, concerns had been raised by healthcare workers about Jesus Regueira, Jr.'s mental state, as he was reportedly struggling to cope with his mother's condition. Regueira, Jr.'s sister-in-law, Carol Miloch, expressed shock at the event, describing him as a non-violent and laid-back individual who was deeply affected by his mother's health decline.
The community and the victims' relatives were deeply shaken by the incident, with many expressing disbelief and distress. Catholic Health Services and Catholic Hospice, which had been caring for Morato, extended their condolences and support to the family, cooperating fully with the authorities during the investigation.
