On June 5, 2024, a fatal shooting occurred at the Golf Pointe Villas apartment complex on Sheoah Boulevard in Winter Springs, Florida. The incident involved Laurie Adams, a 38-year-old woman, and her husband, Adel Tawfeek, 51 years old. The events leading to the shooting began when Tawfeek became upset upon discovering that their 8-year-old son, who has autism, had defecated in his pants. Tawfeek yelled at the child, and later at Adams, pushing her against a wall during the argument.
After calming their son and putting him to bed, Adams herself was subjected to further verbal abuse and physical aggression from Tawfeek. He grabbed a beer and sat on the back porch. Adams took about 15 minutes to calm down before she retrieved Tawfeek's gun from his bedroom closet, loaded it, and then walked out to the back porch where Tawfeek was smoking. There, she shot him in the head.
Police were called to the scene shortly after midnight and found Tawfeek with an apparent gunshot wound to the head. He was taken to Lake Monroe Hospital in Sanford, where he was pronounced dead. Upon arrival, officers were greeted by Adams, who was placed in handcuffs. After being read her rights, Adams provided a detailed account of the events leading to the shooting.
Laurie Adams was arrested and charged with first-degree premeditated murder with a firearm. She was held without bond at the Seminole County Jail and was scheduled to appear in court on July 23. A Seminole County grand jury later indicted Adams on one count of first-degree premeditated murder with a firearm. As of the current date, no trial date has been set for the case.
Adams had also taken steps that suggested she was anticipating a potential confrontation; she had texted her mother days before the shooting, asking her to be responsible for their son if anything were to happen. The investigation into the incident is ongoing.
