On June 6, 2024, a tragic incident occurred in Miami's Little Havana neighborhood, resulting in the death of 62-year-old Luciano Obdulio Matute. The shooting took place around 8:30 a.m. in the 700 block of Southwest 5th Street.
Matute rushed to his granddaughter's apartment after receiving a call from his daughter, who had been alerted by the 11-year-old girl about an intruder in their home. Upon arriving at the scene, Matute confronted the suspect and was shot in the chest. He was immediately transported to Jackson Memorial Hospital, where he succumbed to his injuries.
Surveillance footage captured the heartbreaking moment when Matute tumbled down the stairs after being shot, with his granddaughter running to his side moments later. The incident left the community shaken, with neighbors reporting hearing the young girl's screams and witnessing the aftermath of the shooting.
In a shocking turn of events, police arrested 38-year-old Carlos Manuel Rosales, Matute's son-in-law, in connection with the murder. Rosales, who is married to the sister of the victim's daughter, was identified as the suspect after fleeing the scene in a white Toyota pickup truck. He was apprehended later that day and confessed to the crime.
The investigation revealed that Rosales had entered the apartment intending to steal money, unaware that his niece was present. The tragedy was compounded by the discovery that Rosales had allegedly been molesting family members, including the granddaughter Matute died protecting, for several years.
Luciano Obdulio Matute's death serves as a somber reminder of the devastating impact of violence on families and communities. His sacrifice in attempting to protect his granddaughter has been recognized by both law enforcement and the public, highlighting the tragic circumstances surrounding his untimely passing.
