On June 19, 2024, a fatal shooting occurred in Coconut Grove, Miami, resulting in the death of 57-year-old Christopher Jones. The incident happened around 1:30 a.m. at 3320 Southwest 37th Avenue, where police responded to a call of a shooting. Upon arrival, they found Jones, who had been shot, and he was subsequently taken to Jackson Memorial Hospital, where he died.
Jones was a lifelong resident of Coconut Grove and was well known in the community.
He was often seen riding his bicycle around the area. Friends and family described him as a man with much promise, and his death was deeply felt by those who knew him. Jones left behind a son who is a police officer in Georgia and a grandson, among other family members.
The investigation led by the Miami Police involved reviewing video surveillance footage, which identified Albert Antown Sistrunk, 38, of Richmond Heights, as the suspect. Sistrunk was arrested on June 20, 2024, and charged with second-degree murder with a weapon and felony drug possession. According to the arrest affidavit, Jones was riding his bike on Douglas Road when a white Nissan SUV approached. Sistrunk allegedly stepped out of the vehicle, pistol-whipped Jones, and then discharged the firearm, striking Jones in the left shoulder. Sistrunk fled the scene but was later apprehended after leaving a house and driving away in a blue Honda Accord.
The motive for the shooting was not provided in the arrest report. Sistrunk was stopped by police while driving the Honda Accord with a companion and was subsequently arrested. The white Nissan SUV involved in the incident was found parked in front of a home at 14484 SW 299 Street.
