Claudia Barbosa, a 53-year-old White woman, was remembered by her family as a hardworking and loving person who was a "shining light." She had migrated to the United States from Colombia five years earlier to seek better opportunities for her family. Her husband, Henry Mauricio Carrillo, called her the love of his life and an excellent mother and wife.
Her son Nicolas Bello said she taught him to be hardworking and to always do things the right way.
On the morning of July 30, 2024, Claudia and her 28-year-old son, Nicolas, were making a routine delivery to the El Sol De Mexico restaurant and store in Brooksville, Florida. It was a task they had performed for four years. Around 10:10 a.m., before the business opened, they encountered a man outside, later identified as 21-year-old Donald Jamison. The restaurant's owner gave Jamison two free waters, and Claudia gave him food twice. After she gave him food the second time, she told him to remember what the Bible says about never getting tired of doing good.
After eating and drinking outside, Jamison reentered the store and shot both Claudia and Nicolas. Claudia died from her injuries. Nicolas was shot in the chest and in the arm as he tried to defend his mother; he survived with non-life-threatening injuries. According to the store owner, surveillance footage showed Jamison reaching into both victims' pockets before he fled the scene.
Florida Highway Patrol troopers spotted a vehicle matching the suspect's description about 30 minutes south of the restaurant and conducted a traffic stop. The driver, Donald Jamison, was detained and transported to the Hernando County Sheriff’s Office for an interview. He refused to speak with detectives. While in an interview room, Jamison attempted to escape from custody but was immediately recaptured. Investigators found no evidence that he knew Claudia or Nicolas before the attack.
Jamison was arrested and initially charged with first-degree murder, attempted first-degree murder, two counts of robbery, and attempted escape from law enforcement. He was held without bond. In August 2024, a grand jury indicted Donald Jamison on charges including first-degree murder.
