Ruth Goldsmith, a 70-year-old woman, was tragically murdered on August 18, 1993, in Hernando County, Florida. Her death was part of a series of killings committed by Edwin Bernard Kaprat III, a serial killer known as "The Granny Killer." Kaprat's reign of terror spanned from
August 7 to September 30, 1993, during which he brutally attacked and murdered multiple victims. His crimes instilled fear in the community, prompting residents to take extreme precautions. Authorities launched an extensive investigation, employing high-tech surveillance methods, including electronic tracking devices on Kaprat's and his father's cars. Kaprat was arrested on October 8, 1993, after initially confessing to the murders and assaults. However, he later pleaded not guilty to the 18 felony charges against him.
Kaprat had a history of violence and criminal activity, including a prior arrest in 1991 for murder, which was later dropped due to insufficient evidence. His background revealed a troubled past marked by aggression, substance abuse, and a fascination with medieval themes.
