On August 23, 2024, a fatal shooting occurred at Adams Grocery located at 2121 N. Tamarind Avenue in West Palm Beach, Florida. The victim, 21-year-old Tysen Mikenzie Cox, was shot while he was in his car. According to the investigation, Cox was shot in the chest and managed to drive away from the scene but crashed into another car on 25th Street. He collapsed and was found unresponsive by witnesses, who attempted to perform CPR. Despite their efforts, Cox died at the scene at 8:20 p.m.
The incident was reported through a ShotSpotter gunshot alert, which indicated that eight rounds were fired. Police found multiple 9mm bullet casings in the parking lot of Adams Grocery. Surveillance footage from the grocery store and nearby security cameras played a crucial role in identifying the suspect. The footage showed a man, later identified as 25-year-old Denzel Jackson, approaching Cox's car and firing multiple shots into the driver’s side before fleeing the scene on foot.
Further investigation led detectives to a green and black Chrysler Pacifica linked to Jackson, which was found in a parking lot on 1720 North Congress Avenue on August 24. A search warrant for the vehicle uncovered paperwork and prescription bottles belonging to another individual. When questioned, this individual admitted to witnessing the shooting and identified the shooter as “Jit,” a nickname for Denzel Jackson. The witness provided detailed information about the events leading up to the shooting, including how Jackson had asked for a ride to the Tamarind corridor to find his girlfriend and how he exited the vehicle near 22nd Street and Tamarind Avenue before opening fire on Cox’s Toyota Camry.
Based on the witness statements, surveillance video, and other evidence collected, Denzel Jackson was taken into custody by the West Palm Beach Police Department and the U.S. Marshal’s South Florida Fugitive Task Force before noon on August 30, 2024. Although Jackson denied his involvement in the shooting, he admitted to arguing with Cox hours before the murder. He was arrested and booked into the Palm Beach County Jail for first-degree murder with a firearm.
