Jevaughn Suckoo, a 26-year-old resident of West Palm Beach, Florida, was tragically shot and killed on July 11, 2017. Suckoo, who was originally from Jamaica, was a father and was expecting twins with his girlfriend at the time of his death. The incident occurred at the Renaissance Apartments, a gated community where he lived with his girlfriend. Suckoo was found by his girlfriend in a pool of blood near the front door of their apartment, with signs of a struggle evident in the surroundings.
The West Palm Beach Police Department ruled his death as a homicide, marking it as the 19th in the city for that year.
The investigation into Suckoo's death revealed that he had a history of arrests related to marijuana. On the day of the murder, Suckoo had a large amount of marijuana hidden in his apartment, which was missing when the police arrived. The police investigation led to the arrest of two suspects, Lawrence Padgett and Marqavious McCatty. Padgett was a known associate of Suckoo and had been in contact with him on the day of the murder. Phone records showed multiple calls between Padgett and Suckoo, and surveillance footage captured a vehicle linked to Padgett entering and leaving the apartment complex around the time of the murder.
Padgett was charged with the murder of Jevaughn Suckoo, but the case took several years to resolve. In January 2023, Padgett was acquitted of the murder charges. During the trial, it was revealed that the shooting occurred during a dispute over a drug deal. Padgett claimed that he had gone to Suckoo's apartment to buy marijuana but decided to call off the deal due to the poor quality of the drugs. This led to an altercation during which Suckoo allegedly drew a gun. Padgett's brother, McCatty, intervened, and in the ensuing struggle, the gun discharged, fatally wounding Suckoo. The jury found Padgett not guilty of third-degree felony murder, accepting his defense that the shooting was accidental and occurred during a struggle for the weapon.
The case against McCatty was also dropped, with prosecutors issuing a "Nolle Prosse," meaning they decided not to pursue charges against him. The acquittal and the decision not to prosecute McCatty brought an end to the legal proceedings related to Jevaughn Suckoo's death. Despite the resolution of the case, the tragic loss of Suckoo, who was on the verge of welcoming twins into the world, left a lasting impact on his family and community.
