On September 20, 2024, Tasha Smith, a 36-year-old woman, was fatally shot during a gunfight at the Tropical Manor apartment complex in Merritt Island, Florida. The incident occurred in the parking lot of the complex, where a physical altercation between two men escalated into an exchange of gunfire. Tasha Smith, who was not involved in the altercation, was caught in the crossfire and shot.
Deputies from the Brevard County Sheriff’s Office responded to the scene at approximately 12:20 a.m. following reports of a loud disturbance. Upon arrival, they found Smith, who was then transported to the hospital where she was pronounced dead.
The investigation led by the Brevard County Sheriff’s Office identified Prince Alonzo Johnson, a 26-year-old man from Rockledge, as the suspect responsible for Smith's death. Johnson was arrested and charged with second-degree murder, shooting into an occupied vehicle, and possession of a firearm by a convicted felon. He is currently being held at the Brevard County Jail on a no-bond status.
Tasha Smith was described as a cherished daughter, sister, and family member. She was the daughter of Linda Deibel and Michael and Lindy Smith, and had several step-siblings and a nephew. Her family and friends remembered her fondly, highlighting her impact on those who knew her.
