In the summer of 2014, a senseless act of violence tragically cut short the life of three-year-old Tynirah Borum in Philadelphia. On the evening of August 1st, Tynirah was sitting on a front porch in her Grays Ferry neighborhood, having her hair braided, when gunfire erupted. A stray bullet struck the young girl in the chest, and she was rushed to a nearby hospital where she was pronounced dead.
The shooting, which stemmed from a dispute between rival street crews, also wounded three other people, including a man who was critically injured after being shot in the head.
The investigation into Tynirah's death quickly led to the identification of two suspects: Douglas Woods and Brandon Ruffin. Woods was taken into custody shortly after the shooting and was subsequently charged with murder, attempted murder, and aggravated assault, among other offenses. A warrant was issued for Ruffin, who was apprehended a few days later by a joint task force of Homicide Unit detectives and U.S. Marshals. Authorities stated that Woods had transported Ruffin to the location on his bicycle's handlebars, where Ruffin then opened fire on a man from a rival group.
Both men ultimately faced justice for their roles in the tragic death of Tynirah Borum. Brandon Ruffin pleaded guilty to third-degree murder and other charges and was sentenced to 40 to 80 years in prison. His accomplice, Douglas Woods, also pleaded guilty to third-degree murder and received a sentence of 17 to 34 years in prison. The heartbreaking loss of Tynirah, a child described by her mother as being full of life and loved by everyone in her neighborhood, served as a grim reminder of the devastating consequences of gun violence.
