Kapricia Bishop, aged 37, tragically lost her life on March 25, 2022, in Merritt Island, Florida. The incident occurred during a heated dispute with her sister, Brittany Bishop-Gillison. According to reports, the Brevard County Sheriff’s Office responded to a disturbance call at a residence on Topaz Court. Upon arrival, deputies found Kapricia Bishop deceased in the driveway, having suffered a single gunshot wound to the head. Witnesses indicated that the argument between the sisters escalated, leading to a physical altercation. Brittany Bishop-Gillison, who was inside a car at the time, exited the vehicle with a handgun. During the struggle over the weapon, the gun discharged, fatally wounding Kapricia.
Following the incident, Brittany Bishop-Gillison was arrested and charged with first-degree premeditated murder. She was held at the Brevard County Jail Complex on a $750,000 bond. The initial investigation suggested that the shooting occurred during an argument that began inside the residence and continued outside. However, Brittany Bishop-Gillison claimed self-defense under Florida's Stand Your Ground law. She stated that Kapricia had her by the throat and pinned against the garage when the gun discharged.

They concluded that the evidence was insufficient to overcome the self-defense claim. The State emphasized its legal and ethical obligation to only pursue criminal prosecution when there is a good faith belief that the charges can be proven beyond a reasonable doubt.
