On the evening of October 15, 2023, a burst of gunfire shattered the quiet of an East Hartford, Connecticut neighborhood, leaving a family and community to grapple with a sudden and tragic loss. The victim was identified as Omar Thompson, a 31-year-old Black male from Hartford. Police responded to reports of shots fired in the area of 79 Smith Drive at approximately 8:35 p.m.
Upon arrival, officers discovered Thompson inside a parked vehicle, suffering from multiple gunshot wounds.
He was seated in the driver's seat of the car. Emergency medical personnel immediately began life-saving measures before he was rushed to a nearby hospital. Despite the efforts of police, paramedics, and hospital staff, Omar Thompson succumbed to his injuries and was pronounced deceased.
Investigators determined that a lone suspect, dressed in dark clothing, had approached Thompson's vehicle and fired several shots before fleeing the scene on foot. A police K-9 unit was brought in to try and track the assailant, but the search was ultimately unsuccessful. As of the latest reports, the suspect remains at large, and the East Hartford Police Department's investigation into the homicide is active and ongoing. Authorities have urged anyone with information regarding the shooting to come forward to assist in their investigation.
