On a late Saturday night in Bridgeport, Connecticut, the life of Tayvon Geter, a 32-year-old Black/African American man, came to a violent end. The events of March 30, 2024, unfolded inside an illegal gambling club operating on Stratford Avenue. That evening, Geter, along with 30-year-old Richard Davis, entered the establishment armed and wearing masks with the intention of robbing the patrons inside.
The scene quickly turned chaotic and deadly.
As Geter and Davis were committing the robbery at gunpoint, one of the gamblers decided to fight back. This individual, who was also armed, opened fire on the two masked men. In the ensuing exchange of gunfire, both Geter and Davis were struck multiple times. The gambler who fired the shots was also hit but survived his injuries. When police responded to reports of the shooting around 11:15 p.m., they found a grim scene. Geter and Davis succumbed to their wounds and were pronounced dead. A 35-year-old woman was grazed by a bullet while fleeing, and another 25-year-old man was also injured in the incident.
The investigation that followed the deadly shootout led to several arrests connected to the illegal activities at the club and the aftermath of the violence. A 35-year-old woman, Shanica Merced, was taken into custody on charges of conspiracy to commit robbery and illegal gambling. Investigators discovered surveillance footage that showed her allowing Geter and Davis into the club prior to the robbery.
Two other men were arrested for their actions immediately following the shooting. Marcus Farmer, 37, was charged with illegal gambling, criminal possession of a firearm, and tampering with evidence after he allegedly stole a gun from one of the deceased men. Similarly, 38-year-old Sean Ellam faced charges of criminal possession of a firearm, tampering with evidence, and stealing a firearm. Video evidence reportedly showed Ellam taking a gun from the body of Richard Davis. The man who shot Geter and Davis during the robbery was not publicly identified as a suspect, with reports indicating he fired while being robbed at gunpoint.
