In the quiet city of Cañon City, Colorado, the life of William L. 'Bill' Tippet Jr., a 72-year-old male, came to a tragic and violent end on the evening of January 6, 2023. A Navy veteran and longtime truck driver, Tippet was found deceased in his home on the 400 block of South Raynolds Avenue, a place that should have been his sanctuary. The investigation into Tippet's death quickly identified a person of interest, leading to the arrest of his own son, 36-year-old Joseph Tippet. According to an arrest affidavit, Joseph Tippet confessed to shooting his father with a. 45 caliber handgun while he was asleep in his bed. He reportedly told investigators he had been drinking alcohol and had consumed marijuana on the day of the incident.
Joseph Tippet was taken into custody by the Colorado State Patrol in Salida and was initially charged with first-degree murder, held on a $1 million bond. However, the legal proceedings took a significant turn due to what a judge described as 'gross negligence' on the part of the 11th Judicial District Attorney's Office.
