In the early hours of January 8, 2023, the life of 31-year-old Darrian Adame, a male resident of Colorado Springs, was tragically cut short. Police responded to a call of shots fired in the 300 block of E. Brookside Street and discovered Adame's body inside an apartment, bearing what appeared to be gunshot wounds. His death was officially ruled as the first homicide in the city of Colorado Springs for that year. Adame, who had moved to Colorado Springs within the last year, was a beloved wrestling coach for the County Line Rivals, a team composed of students from three southeastern Colorado schools.
The investigation into Adame's death was an active and ongoing process for over a year. In August 2023, the Colorado Springs Police Department sought public assistance in identifying a suspect, described as an African American male with a thin build, standing between 5'6' and 5'9'. The suspect had reportedly been in the downtown area of Colorado Springs before traveling to the location of the homicide. He was seen wearing a grey cap, a dark hooded puffy jacket, blue jeans, and New Balance tennis shoes, and was believed to be driving a white Toyota Corolla, possibly a 2014 model or newer.
A significant breakthrough in the case came on January 9, 2024, when the Homicide Unit of the Colorado Springs Police Department found probable cause to secure an arrest warrant for 28-year-old Damari Sims-Herrick on the charge of first-degree murder. On February 1, 2024, Sims-Herrick was apprehended in Lakewood by the CSPD Violent Offender Fugitive Task Force with assistance from the Lakewood Police Department. While an arrest has been made, law enforcement officials have stated that the investigation remains active.
