In the quiet city of Longmont, Colorado, a young life was tragically cut short on the night of March 24, 2023. Sixteen-year-old Robert Maldonado, a male described by his family as a sweet and respectful young man with his entire life ahead of him, attended a car meet-up near the Twin Peaks Square Shopping Center. The gathering, however, took a violent turn, forever altering the lives of those present.
An altercation broke out between Maldonado and another teenager, 17-year-old Christian
Mendoza. The dispute escalated to a physical confrontation. As Maldonado turned to walk back to his vehicle, Mendoza fired a gun, striking him in the back right side. Despite his injuries, Maldonado managed to get into his truck and flee the scene, but his flight was short-lived. He crashed into a pole at the intersection of Nelson Road and Hover Street. First responders found him unresponsive in his vehicle and transported him to a local hospital, where he succumbed to the single gunshot wound.
The investigation into the shooting led Longmont police to identify Christian Mendoza as the suspect. More than a month after the incident, Mendoza was located and arrested. A grand jury indicted the teenager, who was described as a repeat and violent juvenile offender, on multiple charges, including first-degree murder. He was charged as an adult in the 20th Judicial District Court in Boulder County.
Ultimately, Christian Mendoza pleaded guilty to second-degree murder and a violent crime sentence enhancer. His sentencing was scheduled for April 7, 2025. The tragic event left Robert Maldonado's family and the Longmont community mourning the senseless loss of a young life to gun violence.
