In the early hours of a spring day in Denver, a verbal altercation escalated into deadly violence, leaving one man dead and another facing a murder charge. Just after midnight on April 13, 2023, shots rang out in the 1900 block of Vallejo Street, a neighborhood a few blocks southwest of Ruby Hill Park. When Denver police officers arrived at the scene, they found 41-year-old Richard Leal lying in the street, suffering from an apparent gunshot wound.
He was rushed to a nearby hospital but was pronounced dead. The Denver Office of the Medical Examiner later confirmed that a gunshot wound was the cause of death.
The investigation into the shooting led police to a suspect who was known to Leal. A few days after the incident, the Denver Police Department announced the arrest of 23-year-old Jakari Martin. He was taken into custody and is being held on suspicion of first-degree murder in connection with Richard Leal's death. Authorities have stated that the shooting stemmed from a verbal altercation between the two men.
Richard Leal, known to his loved ones as 'Rugged Rich,' was a father to five children: Richard, Gianna, Jordan, Leonard, and Ella-Marie. An obituary described him as someone who loved spending time with his children and family, and who would call his mother daily for a home-cooked meal. He also enjoyed listening to oldies music. He is survived by his parents, siblings, wife, and a large extended family of aunts, uncles, nieces, nephews, and cousins.
