On a Sunday in Pueblo, Colorado, the life of 26-year-old Aaliyah Nadine Chacon was tragically cut short. On January 7, 2024, law enforcement responded to a report of a shooting in the 700 block of West U.S. Highway 50. Upon arrival, they discovered evidence of gunfire, but the vehicle involved had already left the area. Shortly thereafter, a call came into the communications center from a person who had been in a car in that same location when someone began shooting at them.
The caller reported that two individuals in their vehicle had been shot.
Officers were dispatched to the caller's location near the intersection of Jerry Murphy Road and Desert Flower Boulevard. There, they found an adult male and Aaliyah Nadine Chacon, both suffering from apparent gunshot wounds. Both victims were transported to a local hospital for treatment. Tragically, Chacon succumbed to her injuries. The Pueblo Police Department is investigating her death as a homicide.
During the initial investigation, detectives identified a silver Kia Rio as the suspect vehicle. Later that day, patrol officers spotted a matching vehicle on the east side of Pueblo and attempted a traffic stop. The driver of the Kia Rio fled, initiating a police pursuit that traveled north on the interstate and through various streets before heading westbound on U.S. Highway 50 West. The fleeing vehicle managed to evade several sets of stop sticks as it continued into the Cañon City area.
With assistance from the Fremont County Sheriff's Office, Colorado State Patrol, and the Cañon City Police Department, the pursuit ended when the suspect vehicle crashed into a fence. The driver and a passenger then fled on foot. A short time later, one of the individuals, identified as 21-year-old Davonte Evans, was found deceased. The second individual, 19-year-old Jordan Zeigler, was located and taken into custody. Zeigler was booked into the Fremont County Jail on charges of theft and possession of a concealed weapon. The investigation into Aaliyah Chacon's homicide is ongoing, and at this time, it has not been publicly confirmed if Evans and Zeigler are considered suspects in her death.
