On a summer night by the shores of Lake Pueblo, a life full of adventure and culinary passion was tragically cut short. Dustyn Courtney, a 29-year-old male, was killed on June 21, 2024, in a violent encounter at Lake Pueblo State Park. His death was part of a double homicide that also claimed the life of 20-year-old Trevion Lucas, both residents of Pueblo.
The incident unfolded just after midnight near Sailboard Beach, a popular spot on the north side of the lake.
According to investigators, an argument broke out between Courtney and an unidentified man. The verbal dispute escalated into a physical fight, culminating in the suspect drawing a handgun and fatally shooting Courtney.
Trevion Lucas, who was also present at the scene, was shot and killed as well. Early reports from the investigation suggest that Lucas was not involved in the initial conflict between Courtney and the assailant. The motive for Lucas's shooting remains a key focus for law enforcement as they piece together the events of that tragic night.
In the immediate aftermath of the shootings, the suspect fled the park and has remained at large. The Colorado Bureau of Investigation has taken the lead on the case, with assistance from Colorado Parks and Wildlife and the Pueblo County Sheriff's Office. Investigators have been conducting interviews with witnesses who were in the area, including a group that was fishing nearby, in an effort to identify the person responsible for the deaths of the two young men. As of the latest reports, no arrests have been made, and the investigation is ongoing.
