Jordan Elijah Dewayne Wilson, a 15-year-old Black male from Macon, Georgia, was visiting his paternal grandmother for the summer in Osceola, Arkansas, when his life was cut short. On June 29, 2023, the promising young student, who was about to start his sophomore year at Rutland High School, was fatally shot. Known for his bright smile and well-mannered nature, Jordan was an outstanding student involved in numerous activities, including the Future Business Leaders of America and the Junior
Leadership Corps. He harbored entrepreneurial dreams, with plans to launch a T-shirt business with his friends.
The trip to Osceola was meant to be a summer visit with his paternal relatives. He and his sister had traveled the 531 miles from their home in Georgia to spend time with their grandparents. The tragic incident occurred while Jordan was at his cousin's house. Following the shooting, officers who arrived at the scene performed life-saving measures before he was rushed to the South Mississippi County Regional Medical Center, where he was pronounced deceased.
In the wake of the shooting, questions and calls for justice arose from Jordan's mother, Yatrice Jones. She learned of her son's death through a phone call from her brother and immediately traveled to Osceola. An investigation by the Osceola Police Department led to the arrest of 18-year-old Moses Black, identified as Jordan's cousin, on July 7th. Black was charged with manslaughter and two counts of endangering the welfare of a minor in the first degree.
Adding to the family's grief were allegations that the paternal grandparents, with whom Jordan was staying, were slow to call 911 after the shooting and later bailed the suspect, their grandson, out of jail. Jordan's mother has publicly questioned the circumstances surrounding her son's death, expressing her belief that it was not an accident and vowing to continue fighting for the full story to be told. Jordan was remembered by his loved ones for his kindness, his love for dressing well, and the positive energy he brought to those around him. Funeral services were held at Osceola High School, and he was laid to rest at Whiteside Cemetery in Osceola.
