On October 3, 2023, at approximately 8:10 am, the Iowa State Patrol responded to a report of a stranded vehicle on Interstate 80 at the 187 mile marker in Poweshiek County, heading westbound. Upon arrival, troopers found a male, Jihad Abdul Malik Gasaway, 23 years old, attempting to restart a stalled vehicle.
