In the quiet retirement community of Sun City Grand in Surprise, Arizona, a gruesome discovery was made that shattered the neighborhood's sense of peace. Ruth Schwed, a 75-year-old female, was found murdered alongside her friend, 70-year-old Barbara Leslie, inside Leslie's home. Schwed, a resident of New Mexico, had been visiting her friend when their lives were tragically cut short.
The alarm was raised by Schwed's children who grew concerned after not hearing from their mother for several days, prompting police to conduct a welfare check at the residence on West Agua Linda Lane.
The investigation into the double homicide quickly pointed to a home invasion that had turned deadly. Lauro was apprehended in Goodyear, Arizona, while Wright was located and arrested in Michigan before being extradited back to Arizona. According to statements made by Lauro to the police, it was Wright who shot both victims. Lauro also implicated a woman who was allegedly with them before the crime, though her direct involvement in the murders remained under investigation. Both Lauro and Wright faced two counts of first-degree murder, armed robbery, and burglary for their roles in the deaths of Ruth Schwed and Barbara Leslie.
