In the warm evening of June 10, 2016, in Phoenix, Arizona, a young Hispanic man named Manuel Castro-Garcia, aged 19, sat in his car in front of a friend's house near 65th Avenue and Coronado Road. His life was abruptly and tragically cut short in a seemingly random act of violence that would later be connected to a larger, more terrifying series of events that had been plaguing the city.
According to police reports, a dark-colored sedan pulled up alongside Manuel's vehicle.
An argument ensued between Castro-Garcia and an occupant of the other car, which quickly escalated to gunfire. Struck by the bullets, Manuel attempted to drive away from the scene but tragically crashed his car just a few houses down the street. He was rushed to a nearby hospital, but his injuries proved to be fatal. The suspect fled the scene, leaving a grieving family and a baffled community in their wake.
For months, the case remained unsolved, adding to the growing fear in Phoenix as other seemingly random shootings occurred. Investigators worked tirelessly, following up on thousands of tips and going door-to-door in the predominantly Hispanic neighborhood where the shootings were taking place. The breakthrough in the case came in May of 2017 with the arrest of Aaron Saucedo, a 23-year-old former city bus driver. Saucedo was initially arrested in connection with the August 2015 shooting death of a man who had a relationship with his mother. As the investigation deepened, ballistic evidence and other information linked Saucedo to a string of twelve shootings, including nine fatalities, that occurred between August 2015 and July 2016. Manuel Castro-Garcia was one of his victims.
The arrest brought a sense of relief to the community that had been terrorized for over a year. For Manuel's mother, Gisela Castro, the news of the arrest was a mix of emotions. While there was a sense of justice that the person responsible for her son's death would be held accountable, it did not lessen the profound pain of her loss. She described her son as a hardworking young man who was dedicated to his studies and his job as a welder, where he worked alongside his father. He was a beloved son and brother who preferred playing basketball with his friends to partying and was not known to be a troublemaker. The senseless act of violence that took his life also stole a bright future from a young man who was cherished by his family and friends.
